How to verify an advocate’s Bar Council enrollment

Every advocate practising in India is enrolled with a State Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961, and is issued a unique enrollment number — for example, MP/1234/2015. The parts usually denote the State Bar Council, a serial number, and the year of enrollment.

How to cross-check

  1. Note the enrollment number and enrolling State Bar Council shown on the listing.
  2. Contact the relevant State Bar Council, whose rolls are the official record.
  3. The Bar Council of India maintains a national record of verified advocates; where a State Bar Council publishes its roll, you can cross-refer the number and name.

This directory records enrollment details and points you to the official source; it does not itself certify enrolment.
