How to verify an advocate’s Bar Council enrollment
Every advocate practising in India is enrolled with a State Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961, and is issued a unique enrollment number — for example, MP/1234/2015. The parts usually denote the State Bar Council, a serial number, and the year of enrollment.
How to cross-check
- Note the enrollment number and enrolling State Bar Council shown on the listing.
- Contact the relevant State Bar Council, whose rolls are the official record.
- The Bar Council of India maintains a national record of verified advocates; where a State Bar Council publishes its roll, you can cross-refer the number and name.
This directory records enrollment details and points you to the official source; it does not itself certify enrolment.
